My life way too frugal even right now i’m probably way too frugal with expenses coming in around $1,200 a month but i am increasing this steadily a little bit probably all my life i have never tossed anything away so what i mean by this is anything that i have it has to be completely completely worn out before i would actually toss it even if it’s worn out if it’s
An electronic item i would go and try to fix it i would try various means to try and fix it i would dig in into the item take it apart it might not function as well after i fix it there might be like little patches on it and stuff this has worked out very well for the most part in terms of saving a lot of money because of this i did get to retire a bit earlier but
Now it’s kind of like a time to increase my standard of living but i feel like this is too late i probably should have increased my standard of living much earlier than this because i see the downsides of this if you’re a little brother or a little sister and you are some years younger than me and i see you doing the same thing some people watch my videos to get
Ideas on how to become more frugal and they’re like oh yeah i do this this this and then you know they kind of replicate kind of what i do what i’ve been doing but the key piece i’ve been neglecting is the cost of minimizing your own image i’m not gonna talk about every little thing that i replaced because this is gonna get really mundane i’m just gonna talk about
It kind of generally i’ll bring in an item just as an example hold on okay this is the power strip some of you might look at this and already know that this is a yellow power strip it’s very very old actually did not pay anything for this it was a hand-me-down and i figure i can just use this until it’s broken the thing is these things don’t break his yellowing of
The color means that it’s broken personally i’ve neglected how things look the aesthetics of things because hey as an engineer that doesn’t really care what things look like you care more about function this thing still works the circuit breaker thing if it tries a trip yeah it’s gonna pop and everything so functionally it’s just fine however this thing is yellow
And let’s say you have it plugged in and you have guests over and then they see this i’m not trying to say that you should go and try and impress everybody right because you should be able to live the way that you want to and if the guests you know your friends or whatever really like you they’re not really gonna care if this is old if wherever that you’re living
Is old and raggedy and you know there’s like things are falling off of the walls or whatnot but you know for me personally when i look at this i personally don’t like that it’s yellow so one of the things i’ve been improving on is you know i might have like 10 of these around the house i’ve been buying new ones and the thing is it doesn’t actually cost that much
It you know in total it’s probably like 40 50 dollars or something just to replace so many power strips so you also have to consider does it matter to you and i would say you know it actually does not matter that this thing is yellow but once i realize that because it’s yellow it’s kind of sort of tainting my personal image and you know i feel like i hate to talk
About image right because i am the last person to want to like make myself look rich make myself look good but the fact of the matter is the whole world is based on image even myself when i look at something right you have two different power ships let’s say you have two different tables one is nice and new looking with a brand new power strip let’s say it’s at
The library or something and then another old looking table with this ugly thing which one are you going to sit at if you have you know your own choice and it’s not gonna cost you more to sit at one or the other which one would you choose so replacing things like these when it doesn’t cost all that much then then you know it’s kind of like on a relatively small
Amount of money to be able to spend so a lot of people should be able to do something like this whereas let’s say you don’t like the look of this couch or something right it might cost a lot more for me personally i am act kind of like an initial stage i’m kind of like a person that’s a little bit broken i’m trying to fix myself i just talked about the power strips
As an example but you also have you know other things that are worn out there are a lot of things that are worn out but they still work functionally for example your towel i personally right now have a very ugly looking towel they’re like two small bleach stains i don’t think i even use bleach or anything but like it kind of got discolored and i would consider that
Is probably for a lot of people this towel is worn out and they probably would not hold on to it depending on what kind of standard of living they’re living at some people they cannot even afford to buy a brand-new towel of course even though a towel is like only a couple dollars but for the longest time for me i’ve been living a life where if it functions i would
Not replace it for example the towel a couple of years back i used t-shirts that had holes in it because it’s kind of like summer right i don’t really care that they’re holes in it and i just wear it around the house and no one really cares it’s kind of comfortable because it’s really worn in but a couple of years ago i threw those away because i finally realized i
You know wearing those things really looks ugly i don’t know if you guys have noticed but if you look back there i just replace the light switches i think it cost me about two hundred dollars to do the entire house you have to go and turn off the power and then i go and you know put the light switches in i think it looks really good those things were yellowing and
You guys have to understand that a lot of these products they’re probably like at least twenty years old that’s why it’s so yellow so what do you do with it well because you live in such a first world country if you have the option to upgrade and you know just kind of live with all the new things and you can think of this more kind of like a donation type thing
Because if you have something that’s still function can donate these things to other people that’s less fortunate and other people that doesn’t have a power strip and cannot even afford to buy one then they can use this i don’t know who would want to use this but maybe some people will so outside of making all these youtube videos about stock market right i just
Kind of got sick of it and instead i’ve been doing a lot of reflecting and this is how i came to this i feel like it’s a very life-changing revelation that’s why i felt compelled to share it with you guys on this video now the whole purpose of me sharing this is because i would like those of you subscribers out there that have been way too frugal but yet you have
A huge bank account and maybe you’re way on your way to retirement you could possibly lit up a little bit and just kind of replace some of these things i would have told myself maybe ten years ago to do this just think of it this way if you are super frugal and you don’t replace anything until they’re completely broken then you end up living a life where everything
Around you is very very worn out until you know somehow it breaks down and it’s going to be really really worn out looking compared to if you could live a life and you financially could absolutely afford it probably a year ago or two years ago i was making videos about how little i spend i don’t buy anything basically i never replace anything until it’s completely
Broken and if i look at myself back then just only two years ago i have changed so much and it’s kind of touching to myself this is anyway the way i was living is probably kind of like bare-minimum type of thing kind of like a hobo i’m not to rag on actual hobos themselves because sometimes you don’t have the financial resources to elevate your standard of living
Above hobo status where i would say if you’re a hobo then you just kind of take what is given to you because you don’t have money to buy anything else and then you just take it and use it until it’s broken and then you personally discard it because there’s nothing else that you do with it well with these things these hand-me-downs it is kind of like living a hobo
Because i didn’t pay for this and yet i just kept on using it for many many years probably i don’t think i’ve ever bought a power strip honestly in my entire life yeah all of those were given to me i had a lot of hand-me-downs i got to hand-me-downs from work which gave it to me yeah looking around here probably we didn’t buy any of those and there are many many
Instances of things i never bought and you just end up with everything that you own it’s a hand-me-down people want to be around other people that appears successful so i personally am consciously doing it even though you know i don’t really care about it myself but i do realize that this is what people care about so therefore i’m like a little grudgingly trying
To go that way doing it a little bit and i can see improvements as well it’s not that i personally don’t like it because after i install those switches after i bought the power ship which is actually coming today i get a lot happier i notice my mood improving is probably like you know materialism right you get a lot of stuff when it’s all brand-new then then you
Get happy last thing i want to share with you guys that was kind of another revelation i’m like oh my gosh why did i not do this sooner is i’ve been going around looking at things that bothers me one thing was i had a mouse pad next to where i work and edit these videos and there was a seam in between so my mouse whenever it hits that seam it would just kind of go
Up and then you know it would annoy me a little bit so i’ve been noticing a lot of these little annoyances and i’ve been buying little things it actually doesn’t cost all that much i bought a mouse pad for like twenty seven dollars on like one of those full desk mouse pads and now my workflow is so much better i never get that annoyance anymore so it’s kind of like
Paying to remove that annoyance from your life once and for all another thing i noticed myself doing is buying a brand new gopro a gopro hero 8 this is not exactly about upgrading you know and having the latest and greatest and whatnot this is more about saving yourself time from looking at it too much do you have one of those items where you kind of want right but
Then you keep on going online and checking out what the prices are and seeing oh yeah it did it reduce in price oh should you look at it and then you put it on your shopping list and you just keep on coming back to it again and again well if you add up all this time that you spent looking at it it might have been hours 10 hours maybe and i know personally for myself
I’ve looked at it so many times that my purpose of buying this item was actually to stop myself from looking at it so that i won’t waste any more time looking at it anymore so after i bought it indeed i stopped looking at it and i would say this is the mind-boggling thing about it even if i never use this gopro it probably is worth my time and money to buy it do you
Guys see how profound this is because i don’t actually even have to use the item for it to be worth my time it’s just the fact of buying it allows me to save time to not look at it anymore so this is this is kind of like a new way of looking at i don’t know life in general for me and ever since i upgraded whole bunch of little things my standard of living has kind
Of like increase a lot you know if i were to put a number on it 50 percent 60 percent i wouldn’t say double or anything but man it’s it’s increased by quite a bit and me sharing this video is i really wish that for those of you that financially can afford to do this go ahead and buy those little things just just go around noticing what is bothering you and if you
Know that there is some item that can alleviate these things something that you use every single day these are the prime candidates to upgrade make things a lot more streamlined personally i am kicking myself for not realizing this myself and sort of getting into the rabbit hole of being too frugal you start to think about how you can save money how you can never
Buy anything and this is exactly what i did whenever i don’t have to buy something because i already have it or maybe it still functions but maybe it looks ugly then i don’t buy it and i’ve been doing this for many many years but for those of you that are saving more than fifty percent of your income maybe you’re not retired yet i think you can afford to just pick
