Seagate 5TB External Harddrive:
How’s it going everybody this is peter bush today i’m gonna talk about digital hoarding and if it’s a problem or not i know a lot of people that likes to take a lot of pictures a lot of video they like to save every single digital thing that they have and just pump it all together and never delete anything not in relation to real hoarding where you have physical
Objects that takes up space digital hoarding does not really take up all that much space unless you’re talking about physical media like these dvds over here over the course of five or ten years you’ll notice the capacity of hard disks just keeps on increasing and you can essentially pay the same price for an ever-increasing amount of data capacity look over there
For a second this is an external storage device that i had a long time ago it has 300 gigabytes and usually i spent about somewhere between a hundred and two hundred dollars for these things so 300 gigabytes over here a while later i spent about the same amount on this 1.5 terabyte hard disk same amount couple years later four terabytes and because i’m doing youtube
Videos now i generate a lot more raw video file so then i tend to save all of those this is a five terabyte hard disk drive for about $120 or so that seems to be the sweet spot because if you jump to buying an 8 terabyte you’re gonna see something a lot bigger and the price drop per terabyte is not all that significant so about 4 to 5 is the sweet spot currently
Now you wonder is digital hoarding a problem it is a problem if it causes you significant costs to keep all this digital media if you take so much data that you have to keep on buying thousands of dollars of hardness yes sure but this day and age if you spent just 125 dollars on this 5 terabyte hard disk drive you’re likely gonna have a really hard time trying to
Fill this up with all your digital pictures unless you’re like a professional photographer or something digital hoarding used to be a bigger problem when hard disk space was a little bit more expensive than it is today but today i mean i know your pictures is going to have more megabytes your video files it’s higher resolution takes much more space but still having
5 terabytes is basically enough for most people that aren’t constantly recording pictures and videos now should you even try to organize everything and try to toss out some of your digital media my argument is that no you don’t need to do that because you’re just essentially wasting time looking through all your files trying to separate out everything trying to
File everything the question is if you have a whole bunch of digital media that’s unsorted should you go around trying to sort it all delete some of it so that you reduce your disk usage and essentially tidying things up so that you can toss some of it away the point here is that the cost of hard disk space is so little these days that spending your time trying to
Sort two things is likely not going to add much value to yourself you’re just going to be wasting this time why not just buy something like this it essentially cost you $120 okay but with this maybe you’re gonna save i don’t know 20 hours 40 hours of your time and instead you whatever you have just plop it all on to here and then when you actually do need it you
Can go and search for it most of the old digital media that i save i do not even look up anymore i don’t even actively reference them anymore and most of the time you kind of just want them there so you have a warm fuzzy feeling that it’s there when you need it to you realize that the longer you keep it the more you do not need something and much later on if you
Ever find a time for some reason you want to go through a sure you can go and delete it one at a time but my argument here is that this digital media stuff these hard drives are so cheap you don’t have to sort anything it’s a waste of time just plop it all on here and you know you’re done with it already another aspect of things is that people used to burn a lot
Of data on dvds this used to be a very very cost effective solution of storage instead of buying hard disk because for about 20 dollars you can buy 100 dvds and it has 4.7 gigabytes per dvd times 100 means you have half a terabyte of data storage for $20 this is five terabytes and it costs $120 roughly if by five terabytes of dvd storage it’s gonna cost me about
$200 instead so do you want to spend all this time burning dvds or you can just buy something like this and is essentially going to last longer than these this because these this have a lifetime of i don’t know 5 10 years or something they do go bad hard discs however they also go back if you plug them in all the time the bearing in it or the readhead if you plug
Them in for a really long time it might crash and it’s going to ruin all your data however if the only time you turn it on is to load data into it and most of time it’s not spinning then data storage in hard disk that is not moving is very very reliable of course if you have something that you want to save like documents and things it’s not gonna take more than i
Don’t know 100 megabytes maybe 1 gigabytes for all of your documents well duplicate those those more important things save it in multiple spots whereas when you have videos maybe you have pictures that you really really want to keep then you can put them in multiple storage units i hope this way of thinking about digital storage and just kind of you know shoving
It up and under the rug will save you a lot of time you know just get a big hard disk and your whole digital hoarding problem goes away don’t forget to give me a like on this video comment down below let me know if you think the same way about digital hoarding just buy something and your problem goes away if you’re interested in supporting my channel check out my
