You CAN become a minimalist. I have struggled to reduce my things for years and have found certain way of thinking to greatly help in doing so. I know first hand how hard it is to let go of past items when there is some value left in it. Watch to see the tips and tricks I used to becoming more minimal.
Today i want to show you the tips and tricks that i personally use in order to help myself psychologically to get rid of more stuff how’s it going everybody this is beat the bush by no means am i claiming that i’m a minimalist already because as you can see behind me i still have quite a lot of stuff i’m basically a recovering mini hoarder i have lots and lots
Of stuff however over the years it’s gotten a lot better my whole attitude from the very beginning has been that whenever there’s an object and there’s even a little bit of value in it i cannot throw it away my thought is that if somehow i can take this and sell it then i can exchange it for some sort of value at least i can get something back oftentimes i found
Myself only able to throw something away when it’s completely completely useless let’s say it’s some sort of music player and it has to be so broken that i personally cannot fix it then i would go okay i’m gonna recycle it or throw it in the trash one of the tricks that i was able to use to get rid of more stuff more easily it’s basically the group like things
Together i have a lot of units of the same exact thing however they’re dispersed all over the home for example i have some speakers that might be laying around i don’t need if you just add up all the speaker systems it might come out to be like 10 or 12 remote same thing with vacuum cleaners i personally right now have about 5 vacuum cleaners now the exercise here
That i’ve used before is to try to group all those things together in one place theoretically i don’t really need that many vacuum cleaners i only need one maybe two because there’s that portable one so technically i don’t even need those shop vac so if you put them all together then you can kind of see oh my gosh i really do have a lot of units of that same exact
Thing other things that you can group together is maybe your old cell phone your old cell phone charger just gather everything in one spot and you’ll see how ridiculous it becomes but what do you do after you see how ridiculous it is well you sell some of it of course you can use some of the websites like ebay amazon craigslist closed v or other kind of apps that
Allows you to sell locally when you sell it you don’t have to pay income taxes on it in most instances if you sell it at a loss that is for less and what you bought it for then you don’t have to pay income taxes because you’re not actually making any money off of it the next thing that allow you to minimize more easily is to have a reason to minimize you may have
Various reasons maybe you have so much clutter that you can’t even move around in your home maybe you want to minimize so that you can more easily pack up and then just go travel the world maybe you want to declutter so that you can reduce the items that you own in your storage area so you don’t have to pay for that storage area anymore it’s like a hundred dollars
Or more every single month that you can save when you have a reason it becomes a little bit easier to do this just keep on reminding yourself of this very reason why you’re doing it think of all those things that you sell that you can take that money and fund whatever that you want to do with it for example if you want to travel all those things that you sell you
Can just take that money that you get however much or little it is then you can put it in the fund for your traveling now going back to when you have gathered a lot of stuff think about only having one single item of that many things if you have a lot of speakers like i do maybe you want to consider only having one set of it you can connect multiple inputs to the
Same set of speakers you don’t need that many different sets so when you group them together then you can start thinking about well how can it be possible that you only need one set of those you don’t actually need a backup you can think about getting rid of all those other ones because you can use the most premium set of speakers that you have you keep those and
Then you get rid of all the other ones there for improving your quality of life because then you’re always using the premium stuff and all those little you know ugly ones the ones that’s not so good then you get rid of them then well you it’s sort of kind of like an upgrade for yourself just remember when you have a lot of stuff sort of ease into it if you have
Ten sets of speakers or handle burners just think about grouping them in how much you like them and then try to get rid of the least liked item after you sell the item try keeping the money in a separate account or at least just keep tabs on how much you gain from it this will help you in terms of a feedback loop because when you look at how much you’ve saved you
Can go wow you know that turned out pretty well so this is going to encourage you to do it some more one of the things i have to overcome when selling stuff is sometimes i have to sell things at a loss let’s say i bought something for $100 and i had to sell it at $80 or $60 well sometimes he just kind of keeps me from wanting to sell it because i’m like well
I already bought it i have multiple units of this thing but maybe i can make use of it instead the idea here is there’s multiple ways to think about this thing because if you get rid of these multiple units that you don’t actually use and you might be able to no longer need to buy a storage unit to hold this stuff maybe you can even downsize your living space
Because you reduce so much of these redundant items that you only have one of each that you need then you don’t need as much space when you think about it sometimes when you keep something and you’re not really using it it might just sit there without being used and it will still depreciate to almost zero when you think about it sometimes when you keep an item and
You’re not really using it even though the current price has already depreciated and you have to take a loss for selling it it might also depreciate some more all the way down to zero so just holding on to that item you’re likely gonna incur and even be your loss so think about it that way and that might kind of help you sell the item even at a slight loss now
Sometimes we might psychologically think that we need certain items that’s the main thing about hoarding because people hoard it thinking oh yeah you know sometimes later five years later ten years later i might actually need to use it if you have that issue you might want to think about in terms of well if you sell it okay you’re not gonna have it anymore but
Maybe in the future you can always buy it back on ebay or something and it’s likely you’re gonna be able to buy it back for cheaper because whatever amount that you sold it for its depreciated some more by the time you actually need it let’s say a year later and then when you buy it back it’s gonna be cheaper therefore you’re gonna be saving money in this little
Transaction in my experience is very very rare that you will ever need to buy something back it’s so rare that i don’t even remember the last item that i actually have to buy back i peg it close to something like one out of a hundred items if you really actually need the item back well you know you can just spend a little bit more money even if it costs you more
You can buy it back even if you had to buy something back with all the income coming in from selling all the stuff that you don’t actually need you’re still gonna be up ahead by a huge huge margin even if you have to put a little bit of money back in order to buy the things that you actually need again my last tip is that when i walk into a room with a lot of items
Sometimes you might be overwhelmed by the stuff that you’re trying to get rid of you might look at things and then go oh my gosh there’s like this here okay this is how i’m gonna try and sell it this is how i need to clean this up and get rid of it and then before you’re even done with that your mind might wander into another area of the room or may be you might
Walk into another part of the home and then go okay you know let me work on this for a while but what i notice happening is that if you try to do everything at once just think about everything at once you end up just kind of staring at everything for like a really long time and just thinking how to get rid of it and then you actually don’t ever get rid of even one
Thing and ours might pass and you’ll just be like looking at this looking at that oh my gosh how am i gonna get rid of this how am i gonna get rid of that and it becomes not very productive so my best advice for this is when you look at something okay just ignore everything else focus on one single bin one box if you look at one item try to get rid of it try to
At least list it on ebay and then you can move on to the next item don’t think about oh i need to list this item i need to list this item or that item and then you try to put them all together don’t do that because that’s just gonna sidetrack you think about one single item at a time do one single one at a time one at a time now when i do a single item i might not
Have to do some sort of cost analysis have to go well how much can i sell this for i do a little bit of research on ebay and then i go okay am i getting even gonna turn a profit okay how much time is it gonna cost me to do this listing well if it’s gonna earn me like very very little that is the time to think about well not listing it at all because that cost you
Time to list it also cost you time to do the transaction package it up send it off to the mailbox and stuff so when you have an item that is particularly of a low value you might want to consider grouping it together with like items so that it can be sold as a lot for a little bit more expensive so that it might be worth your time after you realize okay it’s of zero
Value at all you might want to donate it or you might want to recycle it or actually just stick it in the landfill bin of course for those people not trying to extract every single few dollars out of every single item you might also want to donate it sometimes i personally am getting to that point where i go okay this thing it might earn me like five dollars but
Then i have to wait a week for the auction to end i have to still package it up it’s getting to a point where it’s not worth it and you want to consider a wastage fun maybe you want to waste $100 okay imaginary $100 this amount it’s just kind of gonna make you feel better it’s a decluttering fun you want to pay money into it just to get rid of your stuff so this
Is kind of like yeah you have to use a little bit of money but this is just money that is not earned from you using all your time people have limited time you don’t want to waste all your time listing stuff on ebay listing stuff on amazon just to try and get rid of stuff so you might want to go okay i’m gonna have this set amount this set amount is gonna help me
Minimize it’s gonna help me declutter why because you want to free up your mind you want to reduce the amount of things that’s in your life the space needed to hold all your stuff will not be as much you might be able to move into a smaller area you might not need to buy that storage area anymore and this might be able to allow you to travel more freely just because
